Engage and inspire in the here and now
Doug Conant was CEO and President of the Campbell Soup Company from 2001-2011. In order to improve the company’s declining business performance and employee engagement he took radical action. He transformed the global leadership team, reconfigured the portfolio, cut costs, changed the culture, and made integral strategic investments. His aim to achieve superior employee engagement was critical to the company’s amazing turnaround, and to his development of a uniquely effective leadership model that advanced stakeholder value. Under his leadership, employee engagement at Campbell Soup notably went from being among the worst in the Fortune 500 to being consistently among the best.
“To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace.”
Doug Conant’s famous quote gave us inspiration for our latest Global Perspectives report – What Makes a Winning Workplace? – because, who doesn’t want to be up there with the best in their industry? And, like Doug, we believe employee engagement is critical to achieving this kind of performance.
Ten ways to win
Employee engagement is a bit part of being a winning workplace. We know that because the statistics have been quoted at us time and again. But the relationship between engagement and performance is complicated. You can’t just commit to creating a very engaging environment and expect a direct and proportionate increase in the bottom line. It is more about figuring out how to make an engaging environment where people are able and motivated to do their best. So in our report, we identified ten things beyond just engagement which organizations need to consider if they want a winning workplace. They include lifestyle trends which are impacting the workplace, statistical drivers of employee engagement and concepts which, when woven around everything you do, enhance your offer.
- Create superfans
- Engage and inspire in the here and now
- Empower leaders
- Win with words
- Show appreciation and value
- Give opportunity to develop
- Care at any cost
- Create a line between employees and customers
- Encourage ideas… and expect some of them to fail
- Support today for a better tomorrow
Global Perspectives 2016
There are a lot of reports that simply describe the trends in employee engagement. We have been there and done that. This year we wanted to undertake more of an investigation. So, with the objective of identifying what makes a winning workplace – a workplace where employees are inspired, engaged and enabled to do their best and contribute to great things – we undertook our 7th annual Global Perspectives study.
We surveyed 8,880 employees across Europe, the US and APAC and undertook intense analysis of the data. We ran statistical analyses to understand more than just the trends, but the underlying drivers and influencers that make employees feel the way they do. And more importantly, what we can do to make them feel more positive.
In our upcoming webinar on August 23rd, we will discuss the findings from our study, and uncover how employee advocacy could be the key to attracting the right talent, and how big an impact the right words said in the right way can have- along with more on the 10 aspects of creating a winning workplace.
